Being involved in a number of things is a part of any college experience. It is a great way to make friends, try new things, and acquire new skills. Washington College has a very wide range of extracurricular activities such as, club sports, caring for kids, The Collegian, and even Relay for Life. If you are involved in one or more of the clubs here at WAC you know how much fun they can be! Furthermore, you know how much work each club deserves and needs in order to function properly. Balancing your extracurricular activities and your academics can be a bit of a struggle and very difficult at some points. When these two overlap it can affect the work you put into each of them. Your commitment can suffer as well as your schoolwork, and you can become deprived of sleep as well as social and free time. However, if you manage your time wisely and do not procrastinate you will be able to get all of your work done.
The key to balancing your extracurricular activities and your schoolwork is proper planning. Make sure to have a planner that you actually use, and write down everything you have to do for each week. This way you can manage your time and spread things out. The visual of seeing everything you have to do will help you remember all of it and allow you to mange your time more efficiently. When you know you have free time try to get a head on work and be productive. Giving yourself a deadline will help keep you from procrastinating and will also allow you to get other work done. Being passionate about you extracurricular activates will also help you put all of your effort into them. If you do not care about a club or group on campus it will be more difficult for you to give it the attention it deserves. Plus it is a lot easier to devote precious time and energy to something you enjoy doing.
Always remember to leave time for fun and do not overload yourself too much. Being able to unwind and have nothing to do is never a bad thing, so try not to have too much planned and leave a little time for relaxing. If you enjoy being involved and having things to do, it is possible to balance everything and still have free time. So if you want to join more clubs do not be afraid to give it a try. Washington College has many great opportunities and events that can be very beneficial to one’s future career. Do not let a busy schedule deter you from trying new things and branching out. In the end you many have to make sacrifices and give up a movie night with friends. But schoolwork, clubs, and interesting opportunities have stimulating values. Balancing everything can be done with a little extra time and care. When done correctly the results can be life changing and leave you with a great sense of accomplishment!
