While many of us were celebrating this weekend members of the men’s and women’s swim team where away at championships. Every year many of the swimmers miss the festivities of Birthday Ball weekend and compete in the Centennial Conference Championships. This year, the team traveled to Gettysburg, PA for a weekend filled with competition. The other teams in Washington College’s conference who were at the championships were Gettysburg, Franklin & Marshall, Ursinus, Swarthmore, Dickinson, and McDaniel. The men’s team finished 2nd overall at the championships, which according to the Washington College Varsity Athletics web site, is the first time in twenty years.
I asked Ashley Maurizi’15, a member of the women’s swim team, how the Centennial Conference Championships went. “Champs were exciting, it’s always fun to see all the hard work you put into the entire season pay off,” said Ashley. She also told me that both the men and women’s teams did really well and both did better than they did last year. Ashley said, “There were both season and lifetime best times for both boys and girls. And we had lots of men and women in finals and consolation finals, which is exciting to watch!” Also the relays were exciting and both teams did really well. As a senior, Ashley has been to championships four times and has not made it to Birthday Ball. I asked Ashley how she felt about missing out and she said, “I know that a lot of the underclassmen were bummed about not going to birthday ball, I was personally sad that I missed out on seeing all of the alumni come back, so I wish we could have worked more with the school to make it a week later. But I personally wouldn’t trade champs for birthday ball.”
The men and women’s teams did great and championships and it is so great to see such team spirit from them. Even though they missed about on Birthday Ball weekend they love their sport so much it does not seem bother them. Both teams truly worked hard this season and like Ashley said, their hard work paid off.
