Each year, the Service Council teams with Blood Bank of Delmarva to hold two blood drives. One is held in October and is Halloween themed, while the other is held in February around Valentine’s Day. Today, the “Love Sucks” blood drive took place in the Goosenest from 10-3. Donating blood is simple and incredibly beneficial to people in need.
The entire blood donation process is very easy and only takes about 5 minutes. The process includes four steps: medical history, physical checkup, donation, and snacks! After donating, members of service council make sure that donors have some rest time and eat a snack. The Delmarva staff and volunteers are experienced and super friendly! Just about anyone can donate.
Donating blood is a very important and charitable thing to do. Blood cannot be artificially made yet, so it is crucial for people to continue to make donations of every blood type. One pint of donated blood can be split into platelets, plasma, and red blood cells. This one pint can go toward helping save three people. Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood and about one in seven people entering a hospital need it. More than 4.5 million patients need blood transfusions every year. Luckily, about 12.6 million units of blood are donated each year by about eight million blood donors.
If you feel inspired to donate but missed your chance today, do not worry! There will be another opportunity in October during Halloween. Donate blood and save a life!
